Mulching & Dethatching – The Keys to a Low Maintenance Lawn and Garden

March 13, 2017 by

If you want a healthy lawn and garden, you must take care of them on a regular basis. Two ways to do this are mulching and dethatching. If you don’t know what these helpful terms mean, this article can help. Learn what these processes are and how they improve your outdoor space.

What Dethatching Is

Dethatching is the removal of thatch. Thatch is a layer of decaying plant matter that builds up between your lawn and the ground, often brown. While a little is a good thing, a lot can attract bugs and other pests as well as keep your grass from sturdily taking root.

What Mulching Is

Mulch can be made with almost anything as long as it is non-toxic and breaks down over time. It’s a substance laid over the base of your plants to kill weeds and add moisture and fertilizing properties. Mulching and dethatching also both give your garden a pleasing aesthetic.

How to Dethatch

While dethatching can be done by a layman, it is a tedious process of grass-combing with special equipment that you may want to pass on to an expert. They can make sure it’s done correctly and save you hours of work.

How to Mulch

Mulching can be done with a variety of materials. For example, placing newspaper below wood mulch will kill off weeds. Rocks used as mulch will absorb sunlight and give heat to your plants beyond the normal growing season. You can also make your own mulch using cut grass or leaves from your yard. These will add nutrients to the soil and block the sun from getting to the weeds.

Mulching and dethatching are excellent ways to take care of your home lawn and garden. They will keep it feeling and looking healthy throughout the spring and summer seasons. If you’re new to these processes, going to a lawn expert is an excellent choice. They can complete the projects quickly and easily and give you tips for future upkeep.
