If you’ve never made your own garden, it can be intimidating to decide where to start. The good news is, you really can’t go wrong with the design of your garden. Most people choose to create their garden design to match their personal tastes and be decorative while others design them to be functional by planting vegetables and herbs. Here are some tips to consider when designing your first garden.
Mark off the area that you want to use for your garden and thoroughly clean it up. Rake up any debris, get rid of weeds and remove any other plants and items that may be in the way. Create a border around your garden by using a shovel to cut an edge around where you want your garden. You don’t have to stick to conventional squares or rectangles. Feel free to get as creative as you’d like. Then prepare your soil for your plants. You may need to till the soil to soften it and aerate it to accept the plants or seeds.
After your soil is prepared and you have an edge around your garden, map out your garden design. Decide which plants and other items will look best in your garden while fitting your personal style. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different plants and colors. Look at other people’s gardens for inspiration. Some people incorporate old furniture and farm equipment into their gardens, others build elaborate water fountains. The sky is the limit when it comes to designing your garden.
Once you’ve decided on and mapped out your design, start bringing your plan to life by planting your garden and adding in extra touches like bird feeders, lawn ornaments and decorative rocks. Once you have a good foundation planted you can tweak and add as you see fit.
Don’t forget that once your garden’s planted, you’ll want to set aside time regularly to tend to and weed your garden. If you don’t, it will become overgrown and attract bugs.
Once you’ve planted your garden, enjoy it. They’re beautiful and come as a result of a lot of hard work. You may find you have a green thumb and will enjoy gardening as a new hobby. Take photos of your garden design and share it with family and friends.
